LA County to Issue Mandate for Bars, Nightclubs, and Restaurants
September 16, 2021
Category: Legal Updates
Los Angeles County will require proof of vaccination for customers and employees at indoor bars, wineries, breweries, nightclubs, and lounges. Under the order, customers and employees at indoor nightlife establishments will need to have at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by October 7 and receive the second dose by November 4, 2021. The order will strongly recommend (but fall short of requiring) vaccine verification for indoor restaurants.
Taking effect on September 17, the restrictions are an effort by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to get more people vaccinated. Barbara Ferrer, Public Health Director, noted that indoor nightlife venues present a higher risk of virus transmission than a sit-down restaurant due to dancing and singing by guests.
The updated health order will also tighten restrictions on large outdoor events. In April, the county began mandating masks for “mega-events” with more than 10,000 people in attendance. Now, the order will also require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours for outdoor “mega-events” for attendees, employees, and participants. Attendees at indoor mega-events of 5,000 or more people are already required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test.
Until the order is published, it’s unclear what the consequences for violations may entail. Nonetheless, employers in LA county should act quickly to assess their current vaccination policy to ensure compliance with the proposed order to take effect on October 7. Unsure on how to proceed?
